On a visit to a local antiques dealer, I found an almost full set of china with this beautiful jade/sage green banding, and knew it would work great with so many painted subjects. Here is an English Cocker head study.

Here are a few pieces of painted china plates that I worked on in spring of 2018, for a Cavalier King Charles club. The long rectangular platter was for Best In Show.

Late in the summer of 2018, I spent a great deal of my time working on painted stained glass tiles with Tollers as the subject matter. Here are some of the pieces, framed in black wood. I like to use the glass as part of the background…it makes things more interesting and adds something different to my pieces.

This was a commissioned piece, a beloved Yellow Lab that had passed. I painted it on a piece of stained glass and heat set it, then glued it into the wood frame.
This is just another way to get a portrait of a beloved pet, in a different medium than my classic portraits. Prices are affordable.
This is a stained glass box with a horned sheep, custom made for a client who needed a trophy for a herding trial. It measures approximately 8 inches across and has a mirrored bottom.

Here is a custom portrait that I did a few years ago for my brother and sister-in-law of their dear English Setter, Lilly. The portrait is done with a watercolor underpainting and pigment pencil on top for all the detail. In the private collection of Peter and Ann Mathewson.
Below is a portrait done in 2014 of Jack, a black Field Spaniel. This was a custom pet portrait done on commission, with water color under-painting and pigment pencil for all the detail. It is in the private collection of Sally Stebbins and David Blitz.
My latest custom dog portrait was of two American Cocker Spaniels. The black and tan cocker spaniel is Groucho, and the black cocker spaniel is Buckwheat. The client wanted them sitting together with their paws hanging over the edge of the ottoman, and I think it made for an engaging portrait. This portrait was done with a watercolor underpainting, with pigment pencils for all the detail. In the private collection of Debbie Gagliardi.
In October 2014, the Field Spaniel National was held in West Springfield, Mass. I was honored to do some trophies for the show, for Best of Breed, Best of Opposite, Best of Winners, and some of the others. I chose to do my painted china plates, and a few canisters. Below you will see most of what was offered for prizes. I used the four main colors of Field Spaniels for subjects on my painted china. The subject on the Back To The Future Sweepstakes prize was the scene of the two dogs from the logo. Where I could, I added a little touch of gold paint for accents to make the painted china pieces a little more special.
The Newfoundland Club of New England has hired me to do a number of items for fund raisers. Here are four vases, 3 x 6 inches tall, with the four different colors of Newfoundlands painted on. As with every piece I do, each one is a one-of-a-kind work, no two are alike, even if I use the same model dog. Each piece is a mini portrait of a Newfoundland.
This custom painted china canister with an Icelandic Sheepdog was done for a client who was giving it to a friend in Iceland. The canister is roughly 9 1/2 inches tall. The top has three painted chickens on it. The design on the canister covers about half the circumference of the piece, showing the portrait of the dog with a background of Icelandic landscape.
Here is a shot of the top of the canister with the three painted chickens.
This custom stained glass panel was done for a couple in North Carolina who breed Sussex Spaniels. The panel was made to fit into a gate that they made for their front yard. I used different textured clear glass to create an interesting effect, and amber granite glass for their kennel name, Island Sussex. I only asked that they bring in the panel when the hurricanes were coming!
This is the first of many plates that I’ve painted with a Pointer theme. It was the beginning of my new venture into painting on china, for dog show trophies or for gifts. The painted china plate below, and the dog shown, belongs to Laura Salvatore.
Here are some stained glass 4 x 6 photo frames with dog breeds, done for trophies. Below you will see a number of different breeds. Each stained glass dog head is appliqued onto the corner of the frame. There is a backer on each frame with a stand. These are available in any breed, and can be made to sit horizontally as shown, or vertically.
This pair of stained glass bookends were commissioned by the colleagues of a librarian who was retiring from his post. The wooden bases are cherry and were custom made for this project. I used a copper patina on the finished solder to match the wood.
This is an all-time favorite of mine. This is a stained glass panel, framed for hanging in a window, with five dogs who belong to the owners. You’ll see two Golden Retrievers and three Pointers in the panel, in a scene on the water, a duck flying away into the sky. This panel is approximately 26 inches wide, plus the frame. In the private collection of Laura Salvatore.
